Somali Startups Attract Growing Investment Interest

A mobile money system with unusually deep penetration has given Somali founders an infrastructure layer that many larger African markets lack.

Somalia's startup sector is drawing increasing investor attention, built on an unusual foundation: one of the world's most widely used mobile money systems, developed largely without a functioning central banking sector.

Mobile money in Somalia grew because it filled a vacuum. With the collapse of formal banking after 1991 and a currency that had ceased to be reliably issued, telecommunications operators built payment systems that became the country's de facto financial infrastructure. Cash transactions are now comparatively rare in urban areas, and payment by mobile is routine at every scale from street vendors to wholesalers.

That creates conditions founders in larger African markets often lack. A digital payment rail with deep penetration removes the single hardest problem for consumer internet businesses. Somali startups have built on it in logistics, e-commerce, ride-hailing, agricultural marketplaces, health services and education.

The diaspora is the second structural advantage. Remittances from Somalis abroad are among the largest sources of foreign exchange in the economy, and the same networks that move money also move capital, mentorship and returning founders.

The constraints are real. Access to formal credit is limited, contract enforcement is difficult, insurance markets are thin, and security costs are a permanent line item. Regulation is developing but incomplete, and the relationship between mobile money operators and the central bank is still being formalised.
